Robert (“Bob”) Stone Jr. was a 1980 graduate of Sun Valley High School. At Sun Valley High School, he captained the football team and was also president of the National Honor Society, and named All-County in football and track. In 1980, he graduated fourth in his class and received the Maxwell Award for excellence in sports and academics, the “Class of the Class” award, and an appointment to West Point, where he had been recruited for football.
Bob graduated from West Point in 1984 and eventually was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group (“SFG”) where he traveled throughout Latin America in forward-deployed 7th SFG detachments, training units in Direct Action/Counterterrorism missions. Bob remained in Special Operations, taking command at Fort Campbell, KY in the 5th SFG, and serving in other classified assignments. His last duty station was working for the Chief of Staff of the Army at the Pentagon, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel at the Pentagon.
Bob passed away on January 10, 2001 and was posthumously inducted into the Sun Valley High School Hall of Fame, the Delaware County Athletes Hall of Fame, and Special Forces Hall of Fame at Fort Bragg, NC.
In honor of Bob, his family and friends established a scholarship award in his honor. The scholarship award will be given to a Sun Valley High School student who meets the criteria of the established scholarship fund.
